TMJ Issues

TMJ issues refers to dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint – the hinge-like joint that connects the jaw to the skull.

The most common symptoms are severe pain and discomfort, restricted movement and noises during movement – clicking or popping sounds are common. Swelling of the face may also occur and the condition can cause discomfort when swallowing. The jaw may also ‘lock’ during movement.

TMJ issues may be experienced on one or both sides of the face and tends to affect more women than men.

What Causes TMJ Issues?

TMJ Syndrome has a number of causes including:

Grinding your teeth, jaw tightening
Injury to the jaw or joint – heavy blow, whiplash,
Arthritis
Stress
If symptoms persist or are very severe a thorough examination of the jaw should be carried out. It’s also important to have a ear examination to rule out any problems within the ear, such as infection.

If symptoms continue to persist consider seeing a dentist.
